Welcome to Mama Cacao

Cacao the way Africa knows it

Most of the world’s cacao grows in Africa. Yet hardly anyone knows its true taste. Mama Cacao brings it to you: original, honest and with respect for the people who harvest it.

For your ceremony. Your meditation. Your morning moment.

The difference

Ceremonial cacao or supermarket cocoa?

Both come from the cacao bean. But what ends up in your cup is something completely different.

Mama Cacao
Supermarket cocoa (typical)

Instant cocoa often has sugar as its main ingredient

From the Kokoa Kamili farm

Mama Cacao grows at Kokoa Kamili in the Kilombero Valley in Tanzania. Kamili means “perfect” in Swahili. Harvested by hand, carefully fermented and dried under the African sun.

Knowledge

Why cacao from Africa?

Two facts hardly anyone knows.

Where does the world’s cacao grow?

Cacao only grows in the so-called cocoa belt around the equator. Most of it lies in Africa.

Around 7 out of 10 cacao beans worldwide grow in Africa. Yet African cacao usually disappears without a name into chocolate bars. Mama Cacao gives it a name and an origin you know.

Cadmium is a heavy metal that cacao trees absorb from the soil. Africa’s soils are geologically very old. Over billions of years, cadmium has been washed out of them. That is why African cacao contains particularly little of it on average. And Mama Cacao is also lab-tested.

The founder

I was looking for a home. I found it within myself.

I was born in Nigeria and grew up in Germany. For a long time I searched for a place where I could truly arrive. At some point I understood: this home lies within myself. Cacao has accompanied me on this path, as a quiet morning ritual and as a connection to my roots.

Cacao was part of my life from the very beginning. My grandmother was already trading cacao in Nigeria, grown on our family’s own plantations. Everyone simply called her “Mama Cocoa”. Mama Cacao carries her name.

Around 7 out of 10 cacao beans worldwide grow in Africa. Yet they mostly disappear without a name into mass products. I wanted to change that. With Mama Cacao I bring African cacao to Europe and show how special it is: mild, full of its own energy and naturally low in heavy metals.

I feel connected to the Kokoa Kamili farm in Tanzania like to a family. Every cup you drink carries a piece of this connection to you.

Knowledge about ceremonial cacao

Origin, quality and rituals: everything you want to know about pure cacao from Africa.

Our articles are currently available in German.

Your questions

Yes. We ship from Hamburg to all countries of the European Union:

Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden.

Shipping outside the EU is currently not planned.

Mama Cacao comes from Kokoa Kamili in Tanzania. There, the cacao pods are harvested by hand, carefully fermented and dried. The beans come from smallholder farms in the region.

We purchase the raw beans. In the Netherlands, the beans are processed into ready-to-use cacao shavings and lab-tested. Mama Cacao then comes to us in Hamburg, from where we ship across the EU.

Many ceremonial cacaos are sold as a solid block that has to be chopped or grated before every preparation. We deliberately chose fine shavings: they can be measured right away and stir quickly into warm water or plant milk. Ideal for your daily ritual.

Ceremonial cacao is pure, high-quality cacao made from whole beans and processed as naturally as possible. The beans are fermented, gently dried and then made into cacao mass. No alkalization, no additives and no industrial treatment.

Unlike conventional cocoa powder, ceremonial cacao still contains its natural cacao butter and with it its full, original aroma.

In many cultures, cacao has a long tradition as a drink for rituals and community. Today, many people enjoy it as a mindful break in everyday life, for example as an alternative to coffee or as a companion for meditation and quiet moments.

Orders are shipped within 24 hours on business days.

Delivery within Germany usually takes 1 to 3 business days. Delivery to other EU countries may take a little longer.

Yes, larger quantities are possible. For individual requests or wholesale terms, please write to us at hello@mamacacao.com. We will be happy to prepare a personal offer for you.
